Village President Candidate Calls for Repeal of Garbage Tax

Menomonee Falls – Village President Candidate Jefferson E. Davis today called for the repeal of the $1.2 million garbage tax that costs every homeowner $90 a year in new taxes.  The new garbage tax was implemented in 2006 as a “temporary fee” by the Village Board instead of being included in the property tax levy for village services which had been the Village policy since anyone can recall.  But as is often the case with government, “temporary” actually means “permanent” unless citizens rise up, ask questions and support officials who are for taxpayer reform.  In calling for the repeal Davis said, “Menomonee Falls residents need to have their garbage picked up for free because the Village is going to have deal with the aesthetic, environmental and legal issues forever when the landfill is eventually closed.  We need to have our garbage picked up for free which will save the average homeowner about $1,000 in new taxes over the next 8 years as well as continuing to receive the $3 million annual tipping fees from Waste Management through 2016 to cover the $42 million debt service including the new library, police station and village hall.  Let’s make sure this debt service is covered first without taxpayer’s money as was promised by the Village Board in 2000-01.  In recessionary times, taxpayers need tax relief not more taxes to survive and to revive the economy.  Waste Management is a company with $13 billion in annual gross revenues.  Corporations throughout America are required every day to contribute to the local taxpayer in exchange for domiciling a business of this nature in the backyard of that community.  Anything less than that is unacceptable.”  Davis is seeking the Office of Village President in this year’s February 17th Primary Election which will narrow the election field to two candidates for the April 7th General Election.  More information about this and many other issues facing Menomonee Falls can be found at www.jefferson-davis.info.
